Installing it

  1. Tap the button above. Chrome will ask whether to keep the file — choose Download anyway. It comes from this site.
  2. Open the downloaded file (Downloads › kiekie.apk).
  3. Android will say you are not allowed to install from this source. Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, and go back.
  4. Tap Install, then Open.
  5. Sign in with the email address (or name) and password you use on this site. Kiekie is by invitation: if you have no account yet, ask the person who invited you to send you an invitation. Sign in on the website.
  6. Choose which folders to back up, and tap Back up now.
The app is not on Google Play, which is why Android warns you. You are downloading it straight from the family's own server.

What to expect

  1. The first backup is the long one — it works through everything already on the phone. After that it only sends what is new.
  2. On mobile data, files larger than 25 MB wait until you are on wi-fi.
  3. A large video goes up in pieces. If the signal drops it does not start again from the beginning; it carries on where it left off.
  4. Nobody else can see your photographs unless you share a folder or an album with them.
